New natural playground in Johannisthal: Discover nature while playing!

In Berlin-Johannisthal, a new natural playground is being built on an approximately 500 square meter green area between Engelhardstrasse and Nieberstrasse. This creative initiative aims to give children in urban environments a playful access to nature. The implementation of the measure began on October 6, 2025, after the preparatory work was stopped at the end of September 2025. This development underlines the growing interest in the design of natural playgrounds, such as Lindenscapes reported.

The design of the new playground in Johannisthal will be integrated into the existing nature. The existing trees and plants are largely preserved. An accessible central path divides the playground into two different areas. On one side there are bush areas with narrow paths, wooden walkways and a small sand play area with seating. The other side of the playground features balancing play equipment, wicker huts and various sensory games, including a chalk board and a spin game.

Sustainable design

The playground's planting areas are planted with native, drought- and shade-tolerant perennials and shrubs, which are framed by robinia trunks. An insect hotel and mounds for ground-nesting insects are also planned. Such elements are part of a trend towards sustainable playground design, which is becoming increasingly important for children's well-being and environmental protection Bilche wildlife station emphasized.

Full completion of the new playground is scheduled for fall 2026. An additional path to the residential building on Groß-Berliner Damm is unsealed; the old concrete is replaced with bark mulch. These measures contribute to improving ecological conditions and the quality of life in the area. The entire project is being implemented by aspiring gardeners from the Roads and Parks Department, who can gain valuable practical experience.

Anyone interested in training in gardening and landscaping can apply to the Treptow-Köpenick district office via the Berlin career portal. This is in line with the goal of designing natural and inclusive playgrounds and providing them as green playgrounds or nature experience spaces for schools and daycare centers, whereby collaboration with planners and architects is essential.
