New subway trains are starting: 140 cars in Berlin by the end of 2025!
New subway trains from the JK series have been in use on the U2 in Berlin since September 8, 2025. The Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) reports an increase in reliability on the U2 by around 6 percentage points, bringing it now to 94 percent. This is a welcome development that strengthens passengers' trust in the subway. A total of 140 new cars are to be added to the fleet by the end of 2025, which will sustainably increase the capacity and comfort of the Berlin subway. Governing Mayor Kai Wegner personally carried out the premiere of the new trains and emphasized the BVG's commitment to improving public transport.
The new trains offer numerous improvements for passengers. Larger scoreboards, more seats and a new seating pattern are just some of the new features. In addition, the doors can now be opened automatically if the corresponding button is pressed while driving. Information about exits and transfers is displayed on screens in the carriages, and announcements are now also made in English. These are significant improvements for international and local users.
Stabilization of subway operations
The BVG is optimistic: “The reliability of subway operations on lines U1 to U4 has increased by around six percentage points to 94 percent,” says the BVG. The U2 and U4 lines in particular are making progress, as the U4 has been running regularly every six to seven minutes since the end of the holidays. An improvement is also expected on the U3 shortly, as the older trains are gradually being replaced and longer trains are being used. This means that from the timetable change in December, a maximum train length of eight cars will be achieved.
The CEO of the BVG, Henrik Falk, emphasizes the need to stabilize subway operations. Another train from the new series will be put into operation on the U2 in the coming days. Eight new cars are delivered to the BVG every week and integrated, which enables rapid adaptation to the increased passenger demand. The feedback from the Berlin population about the new subway cars is consistently positive, which confirms the BVG's efforts to improve the service.
Infrastructure and accessibility
As part of comprehensive transport plans, the subway infrastructure is also to be continuously improved. In the transport contract between the state of Berlin and the BVG, agreements were made that are aimed at upgrading and maintaining the existing network. A program to improve the equipment of stops and train stations is also intended to increase accessibility. The aim of the project is to increase usability for all population groups.
The intelligent measures for fleet renewal and infrastructure improvement are firmly anchored in the state of Berlin's local transport plan. They demonstrate the ongoing progress in Berlin's public transport and the clear focus on the needs of passengers. The BVG will continue to provide transparent information about the status of the fleet and further steps to stabilize operations.
