New primary school on Koppelweg: starting signal for 87 new learners in Neukölln!

The elementary school on Koppelweg in Neukölln began regular operations on September 8, 2025. This new educational facility will close an existing gap in the district's educational offerings. A total of 87 children are taught in five cross-year learning groups, consisting of three groups in the 1st and 2nd grades and two groups in the 3rd and 4th grades. The official enrollment of the 38 beginners will take place next weekend in the presence of district mayor Martin Hikel reports Berlin.de.

The newly built school building is built according to the modern compartment principle and offers space for a total of 432 students in grades 1 to 6. This barrier-free building is intended to relieve the burden on the Britz school district. The groundbreaking ceremony for construction took place in May 2023, and the completion of the school building coincided with the start of the school year. While work will be done in the coming months on the design of the outdoor area and the construction of new sidewalks, there are also plans to install a pedestrian crossing in front of the school adds development city.de.

Construction history and challenges

The plans for a primary school on Koppelweg go back to the 1990s. However, implementation was initially stopped due to a declining number of students. The construction of the school was delayed due to the late release of funds. The opening, which is part of Berlin's school building offensive, which aims to achieve a more balanced distribution of schools in the district, is all the more pleasing. While the north of Neukölln is heavily populated, students in the south often have to travel long distances to the schools in the north states Berlin.de.

The new school has been divided into modules to accommodate a variety of sporting and community needs. The sports hall is also used by clubs outside of school hours and can accommodate up to 199 spectators. The construction costs for the school and the associated sports hall total 70 million euros. The building also takes sustainability aspects into account, such as rainwater management and the installation of a photovoltaic system on the roof.

The elementary school on Koppelweg marks an important step in the development of educational offerings in Neukölln. The official opening will take place after further work has been completed, for which a separate invitation will be issued. This will also significantly improve the school situation for future generations in this part of Berlin.
