International Roma Day: Flag campaign in front of Berlin Rathäusern

On April 8, 2024, the 53rd Roma International Day will be celebrated, and this is recognized in Berlin with a special campaign. The district mayor of Mitte, Stefanie Remlinger, has announced that on this day the Roma flag is being raised at all town halls in Berlin in order to set a strong statement for respect, equality and against exclusion. In addition, district mayor Remlinger invites all interested parties together with representatives of Roma communities in front of the Tiergarten town hall at 10:15 a.m. The aim is to show solidarity with one of the most discriminated minorities in Germany and Europe and to raise awareness of this problem.

The International Roma Day was first launched on April 8, 1971 with the first International Roma Congress in London to promote social justice and equality. This event marked an important step in the history of the Roma and led to the establishment of its own hymn, flag and self -designation Roma.

This year the flag campaign on the Berlin town halls will be linked to the Romaday 24 knowledge campaign for the first time. As part of this campaign, schools are encouraged to integrate the topic of "History and Present of the Roma and Sinti in Berlin and Germany" into their lessons in order to inform about the recognized minority in Germany, to counteract prejudices and to appreciate the International Day of the Roma. Schools receive teaching materials and teachers have the opportunity to take part in online fortresses.

The campaign in Berlin is part of the global efforts to raise awareness of the situation of the Rome*nja and to appreciate its culture. The flag campaign and the knowledge campaign are important steps to counteract the discrimination against the Roma and to ensure more understanding and respect in society.

For more information about the knowledge campaign Romaday24 and for the International Roma 2024 in Berlin, interested parties can use the contacts of the Mitte district.
