Green Gullys in Singerstrasse: A step to the climate -friendly city

Berlin-Mitte is a new chapter in the urban greenery! In a bold step into the future, the first five “green gullys” in the heart of the capital have been completed. District City Councilor Christopher Schriner proudly announces this measure as part of the sponge city strategy-a milestone on the way to a more lively and sustainable city.

Imagine: Rainwater that used to simply flow into the sewage system now seeps away on site! The green gullies in Singerstrasse not only offer a way to secure water, but also turn the gray roads into green oases. The permeable soil layers are now not only functional, but also pretty to look at! With a mixture of sandy surface, permeable substrate and charming plantings such as the yellow -flowering five -finger shrub and the reddish feather grass, they bring color and life into the street space.

How does the green miracle work?

The secret lies in a clever system: Instead of the rainwater disappears uselessly in the canal, it is guided into the ground by the green gullies, where it benefits the plants and trees. This innovative technology not only reduces the risk of floods, but also ensures cooler roads during the hot summer days. A real hit for the environment!

The total area of the green gullies in Singerstrasse is an impressive 122.5 m², supported by 1800 m² asphalt and 1000 m² paving surfaces. But that's not all! The Mitte district has invested vigorously in the city - a total of 48,000 euros for the gullies and an additional 120,000 euros for a new school zone. These funds flowed into city furniture, new plants, barrier -free walkway crossings and an appealing painting of the school zone. London may be the green capital, but Berlin picks up!

"The first green gullies are a crucial step in the right direction for sustainable climate adjustment in our public space," explains the district councilor. "They help us to better use the rainwater, promote water supply to the adjacent plants and ensure more biodiversity in the city." houses, streets and plants - they all benefit from this grandiose.
