Mitte protects living space: New environmental protection areas for Berlin!
On October 15, 2025 there will be good news from the Mitte district in Berlin. District Councilor for Urban Development and Facility Management, Ephraim Gothe, has commissioned a comprehensive review of the legal basis for environmental protection areas in Mitte. The results of this study show that all seven environmental protection areas examined will continue to exist. These areas are:
- Thomasiusstraße
- Reinickendorfer Straße
- Soldiner Straße
- Tiergarten-Süd
- Kattegatstraße
- Humboldthain Nord-West
- Alexanderplatzviertel
Gothe was positive about the current results and emphasized that thanks to this confirmation, the Mitte district can now use environmental protection instruments in a total of 14 areas. The aim of these measures is to implement construction measures in a socially acceptable manner and to protect the resident population from displacement. The results reports are published on the Mitte district office website berlin.de reported.
New environmental protection areas
In addition to the existing areas, two new environmental protection areas were decided: “Badstraße” and “Müllerstraße Nord”. These new conservation regulations are intended to provide residents with greater protection against displacement and luxury renovations. The “Badstraße” area has around 12,000 inhabitants, while “Müllerstraße Nord” has around 16,600 inhabitants. Experts have determined that displacement processes are likely due to the dynamic developments on the housing market.
The new protective measures introduce a social preservation law that aims to protect the resident population from displacement processes. This includes measures against modernization and the subsequent rent increases. District councilor Gothe emphasizes that a total of 14 social conservation areas now exist in the Mitte district berliner-abendblatt.de reported.
Aim of social conservation law
The social preservation law not only serves to protect individual tenants, but also pursues urban development goals. It is intended to preserve the composition of the resident population and prevent traditional population groups from being pushed out of their neighborhoods. If these groups were displaced, the existing public and social infrastructure, such as daycare centers, schools and green spaces, could become obsolete, which would require new facilities elsewhere. It is therefore important to guarantee individual tenant protection beyond “private” tenancy law berlin.de explained.
The Urban Development Office cannot provide any information about questions regarding tenancy law, such as modernizations and rent increases. Tenants who have legal questions are recommended to seek alternative advice.
