The starting signal for competition for the redesign of the Alice Salomon Platz

The Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Living and the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district office have announced the start for the competition process for climate-friendly transformation of the "Alice Salomon Platz". On Monday, February 19, 2024, the single-phase open space planning ideas and implementation competition advertised across Europe will be officially launched. Landscape architects from all over Europe are invited to submit their creative ideas for the redesign of the city square. The aim is to eliminate the existing functional deficits and to make an effective contribution to climate adjustment and increase in quality of stay.

The requirement program was developed with the participation of the public in cooperation with the district administration. In addition to the needs of the users after residence and communication areas, the focus is on robust and resistant greening as well as sustainable rainwater management. The redesign of the square should contribute to improving the local climate, especially against the background of the progressive climate change.

The implementation of the measure is planned from 2026 and the financing takes place via the Berlin places. The redesign of the street spaces should take place at a later date within the framework of the financial possibilities and political decisions. A jury, consisting of external experts and representatives of the public administration, will assess the submitted work. In June 2024, a further public participation format is planned at the prize court meeting to take into account the opinions of the citizens on the submitted work.

The future design of the "Alice Salomon Platz" will not only improve the quality of stay, but also make a sustainable contribution to climate adjustment. Further information is available at www.berlin.de/sen/bauen/wett competitions.

In terms of local effects, the climate-right-wing redesign of the “Alice Salomon Platz” Marzahn-Hellersdorf could help counter the growing challenges of climate change in the region. By creating resistant green space and sustainable rainwater management, the place could contribute to reducing heat islands and improving the quality of life in the area.

Historically speaking, the redesign of the square could also be a new chapter in the urban development of Marzahn-Hellersdorf, since it emphasizes the need to adapt public spaces to the changing needs of the population and the challenges of climate change.
