Bewage waste campaign in Lichtenberg: exchange old treasures and dispose of it!

Vincent-van-Gogh-Straße gegenüber Nr. 36-38, 13057 Berlin, Deutschland - on July 1st and 3rd, 2025, the Berlin city cleaning (BSR) offers the next neighborhood days in cooperation with the district offices. These events take place in Lichtenberg and enable residents to deliver bulky waste and old objects free of charge. The aim of the neighborhood days is to promote cleanliness in the living environment and to avoid the way to recycling yards. The levy takes place from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at two locations: in Neu-Hohenschönhausen on Vincent-van-Gogh-Straße compared to numbers 36-38 and in Friedrichsfelde, Kurzen Straße 6-12. As a rule, parallel events, such as exchange and gift markets, are also available that offer numerous opportunities for exchange and reuse of objects, such as board games, toys or small furniture.

The neighborhood days offer residents a practical solution to get rid of broken or old things. The accepted materials include old wood, mattresses, electrical appliances, old furniture and textiles. Contaminated or dangerous materials such as tires, colors, paints, rubble and batteries are not accepted. The non-taken objects get into the re-use cycle, which means that they are offered, for example, in the still mall, the BSR used goods. Experts on site are available to questions about waste separation and avoidance. berlin.de reports that the district councilor Filiz Küllüoğlu (Bündnis90/The Greens) emphasizes the importance of this initiative and the active participation of the citizens in these events promoted.

zero waste strategy in Berlin

The Zero-Watste agency in Berlin is also established in the context of waste avoidance, which is used to implement the waste management concept for 2020-2030. The aim of this agency is to lead waste management to a resource-centered circular economy. The establishment of this agency is intended to strengthen waste prevention, reuse and recycling, which could make Berlin a pioneer in waste avoidance. berlin.de explains that the preliminary study on the structure and the tasks of the Zero-WAST-Agency was already carried out in 2022.

The Berlin population generated around 220 kg residual waste in 2020, with this waste being mainly used energetically. This means that they are burned to generate electricity and district heating. However, this method prevents the return of the valuable ingredients from the waste to the circulation. It is therefore important to promote measures to avoid waste and resource-saving use through projects such as the neighborhood days and the Zero-WASTE agency. bsr.de emphasizes that numerous actors, including NGOs and initiatives, are active in order to cope with the challenges in the area of waste avoidance and create synergies.
