Memory of March fights 1919: Lichtenberg district office honors victim
On Wednesday, March 13, 2024, the district office in Lichtenberg in the town hall park on Möllendorffstraße, 10367 Berlin, will prevent the memory of the victims of the March fights of 1919. Every year before the so -called “blood wall”, the events of the revolution 1918/19 were reminded, in particular the sailors and civilians who were murdered in March 1919 by members of the Freikorps Lüttwitz on the then municipal cemetery. District Mayor Martin Schaefer and the historian Dietmar Lange will keep the commemorative speeches.
The March fights of 1919 were a bloody chapter in German history, which also left its mark in Lichtenberg. The disputes between the Spartacists and the military units of the SPD government reached their violent climax in the streets of Lichtenberg. On March 13, 1919, resistance to the military superiority of the Free Corps Associations on Möllendorffstrasse ended. This led to numerous executions and arbitrary murders, which demanded a total of 1,200 lives across Berlin, twelve of them on the wall of the then community cemetery.
District Mayor Martin Schaefer emphasizes the importance of also remembering the civilian victims that were innocently injured or killed by the violence of the Free Corps. The annual memorial event not only serves to commemorate the victim, but also to keep the memory of this dark time awake and learn from history.
The following table lists some facts about the 1919 March fights in Berlin:
| Date | Location | Victim number | Responsible |
| —————— | ——————————— | ———————- |
| March 13, 1919 | Möllendorffstrasse | 12 | Freikorps Lüttwitz |
| … | … | … | … |
The memorial event on March 13, 2024 is therefore an important opportunity to keep the memory of the victims of the 1919 March fights and to work together against violence and injustice.
