Köpenick fights against graffiti: creative walls instead of graffiti!
On November 13, 2025, new steps for artistic design in Köpenick's old town were announced. This is done in accordance with the coordinated planning with the Lower Monument Protection Authority, where the focus is on two locations: the Luisenhain by the stairs and the playground on Kirchstrasse. The aim of this initiative is to reduce uncontrolled graffiti by professionally designing the walls.
Dr. Claudia Leistner, district councilor, emphasizes that the focus is on promoting creativity and quality instead of simply removing graffiti. The artistic design is intended to create areas that are not only aesthetically appealing, but also have a positive influence on the cityscape. These measures are financed by Senate funds from the Berlin special “Graffiti Removal” program.
Professional graffiti as a preventive measure
The Streets and Parks Department will evaluate the impact of these new artistic offerings. The results of this evaluation will be reported back to the Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment in order to check the effectiveness of the measure. The sealed surfaces are also intended to ensure that the works of art are preserved in the long term and are not quickly painted over again.
In modern urban development, more and more creative solutions are being sought to make urban spaces more livable. This initiative in Treptow-Köpenick joins similar projects around the world that recognize the value of artistic design in urban environments. Other cities, like San Antonio, are showing that creative use of former nightclubs and other venues opens up new perspectives for the use of buildings. Each of these projects shows how important it is to preserve the identity and cultural heritage of a region.
Such initiatives also raise awareness of the preservation and appreciation of cultural spaces. Art should serve not only as a decorative element, but also as an active element of the city's culture, stimulating discussions and bringing communities together.
