The focus is on climate change: Flinn Works enthusiastically with carbon negative in Berlin
Berlin, Deutschland - On June 7, 2025, Autlinn Works present the performance "Carbon Negative" in the Sophiosele in Berlin. This staging pursues the goal of clarifying the audience about the complex challenges of the CO2 certificate trade. It is particularly impressive that the data of the visitors is collected in order to calculate the CO2 emissions that arise from the journey to this event.
The production has a CO2 footprint of 315 kilograms, which corresponds to the emissions of a flight from Berlin to Munich. During the performance, the audience is actively involved in the search for CO2 compensation projects. This is done in cooperation with the “South Pole” company, which was founded by Renat Heuberger in 2006 to compensate for CO2 through various climate projects.
critical voices and the reality of the certificate trade
Despite the positive approaches, there are critical voices. The biologist Jutta Kill points out that there is not enough land for reforestation projects in Germany. The certificate trade is referred to by Flinn Works as a capitalist dream and as a greenwashing. Mordecai Ogada even goes so far as to call the trade as climate colonialism.
International trade in climate certificates is a central element in climate protection that was initiated as part of the Kyoto protocol, which was decided in 1997 in Kyoto, Japan, and came into force in 2005. The protocol aims to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of the participating states by 5.2 %. The first commitment periods from 2008 to 2012 recorded a participation of 191 states and the EU, and the goals set were achieved. Germany had undertaken to reduce its emissions by 21 %
mechanisms of emission trade
The Kyoto protocol enables the trade in emission certificates through flexible mechanisms. These include emissions trade between industrialized countries, joint implementation (JI) and the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), which serve to support projects in developing countries. By the end of 2016, over 7,700 projects were registered worldwide, which were able to save around 1.75 billion tons of CO2 equivalents. Germany has approved 418 CDM projects and 58 Ji projects and around 1,800 operators of facilities take part in the European emission trade.
Another aspect that is important in conversation about climate protection is criticism of the distribution of the emission certificates and their effects on consumers. The energy industry achieves annual additional profits of over five billion euros through the trade, which requires better regulation of the certificate trade. A global climate agreement could support the measures considerably.
The current performance "Carbon Negative" by Flinn Works in the Sophiosele is not only an artistic event, but also a critical contribution to the discussion about sustainable environmental practices and the profound difficulties in dealing with CO2 emissions and climate certificates.
