Climate protest in Berlin: Young people send a sign against the climate crisis
In the streets of Berlin, an unexpected protest occurred on Monday when seven young people appeared in front of Bellevue Castle to demonstrate against the climate crisis. Instead of swiveling or slogging banners, the young activists decided to symbolically burn their high school diploma.
The action should show that you believe that your future is threatened by climate change and that your school qualifications, despite her hard work, offer no guarantee of a successful career. "A high school diploma stands for career opportunities that I will not use. I cannot go to study for five years now, because the climate crisis is now," said 17-year-old Niklas H., one of the demonstrators.
Although the protest was dramatic due to the burning of the certificates, it turned out that only a few originals and mainly copies were affected. Despite the theatrical representation, all activists had certified copies of their certificates at home. A demonstrator expressed his future prospects by explaining that he was currently concentrating on building cleaning because he is fun.
After about 15 minutes, the police ended the unannounced campaign because the protest took place in the security area of the Bellevue Castle and was not approved. A police officer explained to the demonstrators that it was their right to demonstrate, but that this was not the right place for it. Nevertheless, it was emphasized that the security forces respect the right to expression as long as it remains within the legal limits.
