Cinema for children: School cinema weeks inspire with sustainable films!

The School Cinema Weeks will take place in Berlin in 2023, offering students the opportunity to experience films in the cinema and deal with important social issues. A central motto this year is “Press, Law and Ethics in Film”, in collaboration with the Federal Agency for Civic Education, as berlin.de reports. Films such as “September 5” and “The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum” will be shown, which make you think about the role of the media.

The School Cinema Weeks also include a film block entitled “17 Goals – Cinema for a Better World”, which focuses on the sustainable development goals of the 2030 Agenda. Films such as “Flow”, “No Other Land” and “Zirkuskind” will be shown and address relevant topics such as peace, democracy and climate and species protection, as the website schulkinowochen.nrw.de explains.

Cinema as a place of learning

As part of the School Cinema Weeks, the students prepare for going to the cinema in class, watch the film in the cinema and take part in a subsequent film discussion. They have the opportunity to ask questions and share their emotions. Subject matter experts or filmmakers are often also present, which further enriches the exchange. The film educators emphasize the importance of the shared experience in the cinema.

A particular focus is on the behavior of children in the cinema, which is often different than that of adults: they stand up, sing or have a conversation, which makes the experience lively and unique. According to estimates, around 34% of Berlin schools took part in the School Cinema Weeks last year. In Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, renowned cinemas such as Kino Intimes, Moviemento, Sputnik, Yorck and New Yorck are involved.

Support for sustainability

The film program “17 Goals – Cinema for a Better World” is not only tailored to parents and teachers, but also encourages students to actively engage with the topics developed. This includes a critical examination of the 17 goals of the 2030 Agenda, which strive for a sustainable and fair world for future generations. The initiative is supported by Engagement Global, financed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The School Cinema Weeks not only offer a cultural experience, but also a valuable opportunity for thematic discussion and inspiration for the involvement of young people in their community.
