Green hydrogen: Germany's opportunity for sustainable energy future
Berlin, 24.09.2024 - The eyes of the nation aimed at the Bundestag! Tomorrow there is a decisive hearing on the hydrogen acceleration law (WassbG), and the Federal Association of Renewable Energie e.V. (Bee) raises its voice. The enthusiasm is noticeable, because finally the starting shot for hydrogen production should be given! But not all gold that shines - the current draft law seems to be left behind in many points.
"Green hydrogen is the key factor for decarbonizing our industry," calls Bee President Simone Peter. "It can also be a decisive flexibility option in the electricity system." The integration of this "green gold" will not only accelerate the energy transition, but also secure the stability of the network and optimize the costs when expanding renewable energies. A real gain for the industry, which can set up in a future -proof manner!
Calling of domestic production in focus
The BEE President warns: "With the withdrawal of blue hydrogen import plans from Norway, we have to fully exploit our domestic resources." The Bee criticizes the current plans for import infrastructure. Current studies by the Lee NRW and the Wuppertal Institute show clearly: Extensive hydrogen imports to Germany are difficult to estimate and have high price risks. "We should rather invest our investments efficiently and in a targeted manner in solutions that later turn out to be sensible," says Peter vividly.
In addition, the use of electrolysers and biogenic hydrogen is crucial in order to quickly stimulate hydrogen production. "Domestic production not only strengthens regional added value, but also creates jobs and increases Germany's independence from energy imports," emphasizes Peter.
necessary adjustments in the draft law
But that's not all: the present draft of the WassbG urgently needs to be revised! At the moment, it is limited to the split and import of ammonia. However, the BEE urgently calls for other hydrogen derivatives such as methanol or synthetic methane to involve the strategy. These alternatives are indispensable for a comprehensive and sustainable hydrogen strategy!
The BEE makes it clear: "The rejection to the Norwegian pipeline shows how important it is to now rely on green hydrogen! We have to progress in our own country and at the same time design the import structures so that fossil fuels are excluded." The time for changes is now!
