Grand opening: Spandau playground of the Colts delights children!
On November 7, 2025, the new playground at the Christian-Morgenstern Elementary School was ceremoniously opened. This event was a remarkable event in which the Indianapolis Colts, the NFL Foundation and the Spandau District Office came together to highlight the importance of play and sports facilities for children. The musical welcome from the school's drum group set a happy tone right at the start of the celebration.
The event attracted prominent guests, including district mayor Frank Bewig and Indianapolis Colts owner Kalen Jackson. In their speeches, both emphasized the unifying power of sport for children and the importance of safe playgrounds. Jackson in particular emphasized that such facilities are essential for children's development.
The official ceremony included a ribbon cutting accompanied by cheerleaders and the Colts mascot, Blue. Former Colts player Björn Werner and NFL legends Edgerrin James and Dallas Clark were also there. The students performed a rehearsed dance and displayed posters with the word “Thank you” in different languages, demonstrating the international connection.
The children had the opportunity to practice flag football drills under the guidance of professional coaches. This commitment not only promotes sport, but also a healthy lifestyle.
An important step for youth sports
The playground was designed and installed by Richter Spielgeräte GmbH from Bavaria and represents the Indianapolis Colts' first playground outside the USA. This project is part of a transatlantic social initiative to promote youth sports and is supported by the NFL Foundation. The goal is to create long-term legacies for children and provide them with safe and exciting play opportunities.
The opening took place during the exciting time surrounding the NFL's Berlin Game, which took place on November 9, 2025. Such events underline the growing importance of American football outside the USA and the initiative to promote health and leisure activities for children.
NFL Foundation Positive Impact
In the context of the NFL Foundation, it should also be mentioned that it is a non-profit organization that aims to improve the lives of people affected by football. In the current funding cycle, a total of $3 million was allocated to the construction and renovation of football fields in several US cities, such as Indianapolis, Baltimore and New Orleans. This initiative demonstrates the NFL's commitment, not only in the United States but also internationally, to improving the quality and safety of sports facilities.
Support extends to the construction of irrigation systems, lighting and other essential facilities to improve pitch quality to better meet the needs of the community.
