Ruhlsdorfer Straße shines in new splendor! The extensive renovation has now been completed and has transformed the road into a green paradise. With the removal of areas, the rescue of trees and the creation of disabled parking spaces, great things were done here.
Project manager Mehmet Dilek is proud of the result: "Before that, everything was parked here. Now it looks really nice!" The once gray asphalt landscape was replaced by large boulders that offer space for the new wild perennial. These domestic plants, such as the large leaves and the liver flow, are perfect for the shady conditions of Ruhlsdorfer Straße and bloom at different times.
tree rescue and innovative solutions
A central goal of the project was to save the eight Japanese mustache trees, the roots of which had damaged the asphalt. "We were able to save all the trees," announced environmental city councilor Annika Gerold (Greens) proudly. This measure was not only expensive, but also challenging. But the city councilor emphasizes the importance of maintaining established trees instead of planting young people who are less resistant.
The redesign also includes new green gullies that efficiently derive the rainwater, as well as two disabled parking spaces and eight new bicycle brackets. Pollers will soon be set up to protect the trees from unwanted parking. In addition, the Technical University of Berlin has installed sensors in order to monitor the soil moisture and stability of the trees after the breakdown. The first results are still pending, but those responsible are optimistic.
Although 32 parking spaces were lost, there have been no complaints from residents. The renovation cost around 160,000 euros, while the planting of the tree slices caused additional costs. The next project of this kind will be Richard-Sorge-Straße in Friedrichshain, where the first measures for tree rescue have already been carried out.
