Keep memory awake: new stumbling blocks in Friedrichshain laid

Another step towards memory and memory! On September 23, 2024, the talented artist Gunter Demnig will move twelve new stumbling blocks in Friedrichshain. This venerable project is not only a sign of respect, but also an obligation to never forget the dark past of National Socialist persecution. In Friedrichshain, over 1,050 such stumbling blocks have now been laid - an urgent memorial for the victims and their fate.

The district mayor Clara Herrmann sums it up: "The continuous memory of the incomparable atrocities of the Holocaust is a central part of our memorial work." Stumbling blocks are not just simple stones, they are carriers of the culture of memory of an entire district. In times when anti -Semitism is unfortunately on the rise again, it is all the more important to keep the memory of the cruel Shoah alive in many places.

What are stumbling blocks?

stumbling blocks are small memorial stones with brass plates that are laid in front of the last residence of people murdered in the Nazi era. They should stop passers -by and stimulate thought. At various locations in Friedrichshain, the stones for the families voucher and Philippsborn will be laid on September 23 - a moving sign that holds the stories of these people.

The first stones are set for the family voucher at 11:45 a.m. on Krautstrasse. Instead of fleeing freedom in 1934, the family experienced cruel times. Jacob voucher and his family lived up to their dramatic fate at Krautstraße 13. The financing for the relocation has been from the district office since 2017, a decision that reinforces the incessant struggle for the memory of the victims of the Holocaust.

At 2:10 p.m. The Stumbling Stone for Adolf and Jeanette voucher is set at Linienstraße 29, which were deported to Poland in 1934 after their escape from Germany and murdered there. Another tragic fate: Jacob, Sonja and her children managed to flee to Spain and experienced, which can be capable of human courage.

memory for the Philippsborns

At 1:20 p.m. the time of laying is for the Philippsborn family at Rigaer Straße 107. Rosalie Bernstein, born in Schwetz, married the master butcher Arthur Philippsborn and experienced the unimaginable fate of her family. During the war she was deported and murdered - the pain and suffering are unforgettable.

It is time for us to stand still together and commemorate the victims. Any laying of a stumbling block is a crucial step for the awareness of our society. The stories of these men, women and children show us what has been lost and why we should never forget.
