Flake from Rammstein reveals secret passion: the GDR organ!
Christian "Flake" Lorenz, the keyboarder of the cult band Rammstein, gave deeper insights into his musical philosophy in the new episode "Rockcraft on Tour" on the "Magenta Music" platform. Compared to his bandmate Till Lindemann, Flake is considered the mild and sensitive. He describes himself as a sensitive music philosopher, who has a special preference for playing on his Casio keyboard, even if the batteries are weak. This special singing age tapes him, and in the episode "Flake Part 2" he responds to numerous aesthetic questions in music. He explains the differences between the sound and song, the attraction of techno and reggae to the audience as well as the advantages of his poor English skills when listening to the Rolling Stones.
Christian Lorenz, born on November 16, 1966, is not only known for his musical skills, but also as the main composer of Rammstein, together with the guitarist Richard Kruspe. His career began in punk band Feeling B, one of the most influential bands in the East German punk scene, which was founded in East Berlin in 1983. The band enjoyed popularity, also with the DEFA documentary film "Whispering and screaming-a rock report" that represented the East German punk scene in 1988. After Feeling B dissolved in the 1990s, Flake joined Rammstein in 1994, a decision that was initially difficult for him.
From the punk movement to the international rock icon
The origins of Rammstein are closely linked to the history of Feeling B, since Flake and Paul Landers were both members of this band. The dissolution of Feeling B in 1994 enabled the two, together with other talented musicians, to found the band Rammstein. The band quickly gained popularity and caused a stir with provocative stage appearances, which often culminated in controversial and legal problems. In 1998 Flake and Lindemann were arrested at short notice due to their spectacular representations on stage.
Another formative event in Lorenz’s career was an accident in 2005 when he accidentally injured Lindemann with a Segway, which led to the cancellation of concerts in Asia. His own health was also a challenge: Lorenz suffered from Mumps in 2005, which prevented concerts in South America. Despite these setbacks, he remains in the visible role of the keyboardist and the creative force behind Rammstein.
Artistic influences and personal perspectives
Flake Lorenz not only has a critical attitude towards religions, but also expressed nostalgia for the time in the GDR, which became clear in several interviews. He has given himself negative about the complexity of life after reunification and often reflects on the cultural changes and their influence on his own life.
As the members of Rammstein emphasize in the biography "At the beginning the fire", the GDR played an important role in the development of its music and the formation of the band. Rammstein, who are known for their spectacular stage shows and controversial texts, have established themselves in the music scene and received numerous international awards.
Overall, Christian “Flake” Lorenz's career shows that the roots in such a dynamic and creative environment as the East German punk movement were decisive for the later international success of Rammstein. His experiences and views are not only a mirror of his personal journey, but also an important part of the history of the band itself.
