Holiday camp scandal: How safe are children's and youth trips? New revelations in ARD media library
full screen documentary examines the safety of holiday camps for children and adolescents
In many holiday camps, children and adolescents are obviously not sufficiently cared for and there are always cases of abuse. This shows a new research by the SWR investigative format "full screen". The documentary "Nightmare holiday camp? How dangerous are children's and youth trips?" Take a look at the risks and defects in this area. The report is now available in the ARD media library.
The research documents cases of sexual abuse, alcohol and drug abuse as well as overwhelmed caregivers in holiday camps. Former participants and a former supervisor report on their experiences and support their statements with reviews of large providers on online platforms.
A young woman reports in the documentary how she was sexually abused as a child in the holiday camp and received no help from other supervisors. The “full screen” research also shows that many commercial providers of holiday camps neglect the protection of children and adolescents from sexual abuse.
A particularly worrying knowledge of research is that one of the largest commercial providers of children's and youth trips in Germany, youth tours youth trips, has a bad standard in training its supervisors. Neither a first aid course nor an extended certificate of good conduct are requested by the supervisors. This is the possibility that convicted sex offenders could ride as a supervisor without the provider being aware of it.
The "full screen" research also shows that the training of the caregivers in holiday camps is insufficient. A reporter has applied undercover to the Jugendtours provider and only had to complete a five-hour online training in order to be able to work as a supervisor in the holiday camp. Experts criticize these short training duration and emphasize that more comprehensive training is necessary to ensure the safety of children and adolescents.
The lack of supervision and control of commercial providers of children's and youth trips is strongly criticized by experts. Free child and youth welfare providers are subject to control, while commercial providers have no fear of sanctions. According to experts, this lack of control could become a "perpetrator paradise".
In view of these results, experts require a stronger regulation and supervision for commercial providers of children's and youth trips. However, the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs sees no need for action. The "full picture" documentary "Nightmare holiday camp? How dangerous are children's and youth trips?" Is now available in the ARD media library. It is hoped that this research will help to strengthen the awareness of the risks and weaknesses in the children's and youth travel industry and take measures to protect young participants.
