Ceremonial opening: The new Opera Route North” for cyclists in Charlottenburg!
On August 26, 2025, the “North Opera Route” was ceremoniously opened in Berlin. Prominent representatives, including District City Councilor Oliver Schruoffenegger, State Secretary of Transport Arne Herz and Infravelo Managing Director Michael Fugel, had participation in the ceremony. During the event, Arne Herz emphasized the central importance of this new bike connection for the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district. Schruoffenegger praised the "Opera Route Nord" as an attractive north-south connection for cycling, which not only increases traffic safety, but also set a sign of the future mobility culture in Berlin. Fugel presented the route as an example of integrated traffic planning that takes into account the needs of all road users.
The "Opera Route Nord" extends over 2.2 kilometers from Bismarckstraße at the German Opera to Olbersstrasse. The cycling strips were widened to 2.50 meters in both directions and are provided with safety cutting strips. In addition, the stripes are coated, which increases visibility and security for cyclists, emphasizes [Development City.de] (https:// development city.de/charlottenburg-neue bike-Route-opernroute-nord/).
Remodeling and extensions
The work on the “Opera Route North” is part of a comprehensive plan to improve the cycling infrastructure in Berlin. The second construction phase, which runs between Otto-Suhr-Allee and Kaiserin-Augusta-Allee, has already been largely completed. This section extends over 950 meters and includes, among other things, wide cycle lanes and protective measures that separate cycle traffic from stationary vehicle traffic.
For increased safety and visibility, intersection areas have been marked red. In order to promote cycling, around 110 new bicycle parking facilities were installed. In addition, new pedestrian crossings with central islands have been created to increase accessibility. Nikolaos Rousiamanis, project manager of infraVelo, emphasized the importance of barrier-free construction during the opening.
Financing and outlook
The entire renovation process is financed by the special program "City and Land" of the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport as well as by the state of Berlin. As part of the Berlin Mobility Act, the “Opera Route Nord” is considered part of a comprehensive cycling plan to improve the cycling infrastructure in the capital. The aim of the bicycle traffic plan is to increase the bicycle traffic shares from 18% by 2030 to at least 23% without the expense of public transport or foot traffic.
In the context of these strategic measures, the “Opera Route North” could become a showcase project for future traffic planning in Berlin, which both meets the needs of cyclists and helps shape traffic sustainably as a whole. Due to the ongoing construction work, minor remaining work on the second construction phase is planned for spring 2025, while the third construction phase between Mierendorffplatz and Olbersstraße will begin at the same time. This is a further step towards a modern, bicycle-friendly Berlin.
