Export numbers rise easily: urgent need for reform for Germany's foreign trade

A ray of hope or an illusion? The current export numbers in Germany show a small plus, but the dark side cannot be overlooked! Dr. Dirk Jandura, the President of the Federal Association of Wholesale, Foreign Trade, Services (BGA), raises the alarm: "It is a dangerous mix of crises that still has a firm grip on our export industry!"

The latest figures from the Federal Statistical Office confirm the tense situation: In August 2024, exports rose by 1.3 percent compared to July, while imports decreased by 3.4 percent in the same period. Compared to the previous year, exports only rose by 0.1 percent, imports even dropped by 3.1 percent. But what is behind these numbers?

crisisherd Germany: a breaking export

"We still suffer from the progressive geo -economic fragmentation!" Dr. Jandura urgently warns of the high location costs and falling productivity. The mood in industry is bad and the BGA climate indicator for production connection trade has reached a historical low with 76 points. "The order inputs are low - this is a worrying sign of our economy!"

The Federal Association is urging the Federal Government. "I expect Chancellor Scholz to finally follow acts! There are five to twelve!" The foreign trade president demands unmistakable announcements from Germany for more free trade - especially in Brussels. A dispute over the Mercosur Agreement must not be treated as a taboo!

  • reducing bureaucracy
  • regain trust
  • Create competitive conditions
  • Less stress for the industries

"We wholesale and outdoor dealers keep the country going, but we can no longer! Outdated infrastructure and a European Union that cannot keep up in global competition represent serious challenges," concludes Jandura.

Germany is on a crossroads. The required change of course can only succeed with courageous action to bring exports back to the fast lane!
