Eberswalde celebrates CSD under police protection: Diversity despite threats!

Eberswalde, Deutschland - On June 21, 2025, the second Christopher Street Day (CSD) took place in Eberswalde under increased safety precautions. The reason for these measures was a violent attack on a multi -fold festival in Bad Freienwalde, which took place a week earlier. According to this incident, there were great fears that the CSD could also be the goal of attacks. Nevertheless, the event could be carried out safely with a strong presence of the police.

hundreds of participants demonstrated for diversity and the right queer people, while the AfD organized a summer festival on the market square at the same time. The demonstration train led from the station forecourt via Eisenbahnstrasse and the market square to the park on Weidedamm, where a final rally took place. It is estimated that around 2,000 people took part in the CSD, while the AfD event recorded fewer than 100 participants.

Effectiveness of the safety precautions

Despite the tense situation, it remained largely peaceful. The police held both groups separately and did not have to intervene. Brandenburg's police chief Oliver Stepien was on site to monitor the situation and take people seriously. The organizers of the CSD were determined and could not be intimidated by the threats by the AfD or right -wing extremist groups.

However, the mood in Germany is tense, especially after the increase in queer -hostile crimes. According to the BKA information, a total of 1,785 crimes against LSBTIQ*people were recorded in 2023, which means an increase of around 50 percent compared to the previous year. The most common crimes are insults, acts of violence and threats. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser calls for consistent persecution of this violence.

background and social relevance

The CSD in Eberswalde was not the only one that was overshadowed by hostility. The organizers in Eberswalde, as in other cities, have to defend themselves against the growing violence of right -wing groups. In May the CSD in Gelsenkirchen was canceled due to an abstract threat situation, and there was also a threatening letter for other events, such as those in Regensburg. The AfD's demands in Eberswalde to ban rainbow flags on public buildings make it clear how important the CSD and other events are visible to the visibility of the queer community.

The fight against right -wing extremism remains a central task for the police in Brandenburg and for the entire society. The crimes against queer people caught by the police are increasing: from 68 in 2023 to 118 in 2024. This worrying phenomenon goes hand in hand with an increasing number of politically motivated hate criminalities and a high number of unreported people in violent attacks on queer people.

The implementation of the CSD in Eberswalde shows on the one hand the strength and determination of the queer community to work for their rights. On the other hand, this day is an urgent appeal for vigilance and action against growing violence and discrimination, which is still exposed to queer society. Other CSDs are already planned for July in Falkensee, Wittenberge, Luckenwalde, Neuruppin, Bad Belzig and Bernau near Berlin.
