Design the future of the chemical and pharmaceutical industry: A look at the industry summit in Berlin
in the heart of Berlin, top-class representatives of the chemical and pharmaceutical industry gathered on Thursday to discuss the challenges and opportunities of Germany. The industry summit was under the motto of how progress and innovative strength in industry can be promoted, while aspects such as sustainability are taken into account.
The industry has been faced with massive difficulties in recent years. The energy -intensive chemical industry in particular has to deal with increased costs and an intensified international competitive environment. This led to a falling trust of many companies in good framework conditions at the Germany location. Dr. Markus Steilemann, the President of the Association of Chemical Industry (VCI), called for a real change: "We have to dare to leave. Now!"
In the opening speech, Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized the importance of the chemical industry for Germany as an industrial nation. "In order for it to stay that way, we have set the political course with the chemical and pharmaceutical strategy and other initiatives," said Scholz and recognized the central role of Germany in the global chemical sector. These statements express the double challenge: promote innovative strength and at the same time keep the location competitive.
A central concern of the VCI is to reduce energy costs. The association sees necessary steps in cheaper electricity prices and consistent reduction in bureaucracy to promote industrial departure. The self-proclaimed “green future” should also go hand in hand with a risk-based approach in the REACH regulation and support for chemical recycling. These aspects are of crucial importance in order to tackle the upcoming challenges.
The choice of Dr. Markus Steilemann to President and Dr. Markus Kamieth as Vice President at VCI also shows a change of personnel in the association. This brings fresh perspectives to the discussion and signals the willingness to represent the interests of 2,300 companies that work together over 560,000 employees.
The most important goal remains clear: a strong economy as a foundation of society. The industry must rely on open and dynamic cooperation with politics. Steilemann advocates entrepreneurial freedom and a market economy of the government: "An optimistic, constructive basic attitude is necessary," he explains. "We should see ourselves as the first generation that can actively change the world."
Overall, it can be stated that the industry summit in Berlin not only offers a platform for exchange and discussion, but also represents a clear call for change and cooperation. These developments can be crucial to keep the chemical and pharmaceutical industry on course and to lead them to a new age of innovation and sustainability.
