Brillenbox Charlottenburg: Seeing Together Helping until November 28th!

In Berlin, the “Glasses Box Charlottenburg” opened its doors for a central collection campaign that will accept donations of glasses until Friday, November 28, 2025. This initiative takes place as part of the exhibition “Let’s Talk About Food” in the WILMA shopping mall, Wilmersdorfer Str. 46, on the 1st floor. As the Berlin administration reports, the project is the result of a cooperation between the “Network for Education and Social Affairs GmbH” (NBS) and the Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment.

Any type of glasses and lens strengths are welcome to collect the donated visual aids. Once a year, the NBS will forward the collected glasses to the “Glasses Worldwide” initiative, which is run by the German Catholic Blindenwerk e. V. was brought into being. This initiative aims to provide affordable vision care to people in need around the world. City Councilor for the Environment Oliver Schruoffeneger underlines the positive impact of the project: “It not only helps those in need, but also reduces the amount of waste through recycling.”

The aim of the initiative

“Glasses Worldwide” is a particularly important project because 116 million people worldwide are visually impaired because they lack visual aids. Loud Glasses worldwide 89% of these people live in the poorest countries, where glasses are often unaffordable. Often these people have an income of just one dollar a day, which means they cannot afford glasses. Dr. Klaus Stephan Kiefer founded the “Donate Glasses – Give the Gift of Vision” campaign in the 1970s and collected over 2 million pairs of glasses, which were then distributed free of charge.

The donated glasses are carefully cleaned, refurbished and prepared for shipping. Johannes Klein as coordinator and Carlo Wagner as technical advisor work on a voluntary basis and ensure that these glasses end up in the right hands. Over 80 long-term unemployed people have now been integrated into the projects, which creates opportunities for reintegration into the labor market.

Institutions that would like to support the project can request further information from the Education for Sustainable Development Office of the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf District Office.
