A Berlin tradition: the doughnut
Tempting delicacies are particularly in demand in Berlin and all of Germany, especially at Christmas time. The Berliner, a sweet donut without a hole, is very popular. Traditionally filled with jam and sprinkled with powdered sugar, this donut has its origins in the 19th century. Wikipedia describes that the first donuts were often filled with savory fillings, as sugar was still considered expensive in the 16th century.
Over time the fillings evolved. Today, not only jams such as strawberry or raspberry jam are common, but also variations flavored with rum. Whether as a sweet treat on New Year's Eve or during Carnival, Berliners are an integral part of German food culture.
