Construction of the new wheel strip on Schönhauser Allee begins in August 2023

After a long back and forth it is now clear that the construction of a new wheel strip on Schönhauser Allee will begin shortly. The Senate Transport Administration confirmed this at a request from the Green politician Andreas Otto. The conversion of the section is expected to start in August 2023.

The establishment of a wheel lane on the section between Eberswalder/Danziger Straße and Gleim-/Stargarder Straße had previously been stopped. Now the order for implementation has been granted again.

The decision to build the wheel strip on Schönhauser Allee was made after intensive discussions and considerations. The safety of cyclists played a central role in this. By setting up a separate strip for cyclists, the risk of accidents and conflicts is reduced with other road users.

The section between Eberswalder/Danziger Straße and Gleim-/Stargarder Straße was identified as particularly suitable for setting up a cycling lane. There is already a good infrastructure for bicycle traffic, so that the construction can be implemented relatively easily.

However, the project does not meet all residents and road users. Critics fear that the conversion of the Schönhauser Allee will be available for cars and other vehicles. In addition, the duration of the construction work causes displeasure. It is expected with traffic disruptions and longer travel times.

Despite the criticism, the Senate Transport Management sees the planned wheel strip as an important step to promote bicycle traffic and to improve traffic safety. In the coming months, further details on the exact construction process and the planned measures will be announced. It remains to be seen how the construction of the wheel strip will affect the traffic situation and everyday life of the residents.
