Railway construction site in Köpenick: full closure from July 24th to August 4th!
Berlin, Deutschland - Deutsche Bahn (DB) has announced that it would comprehensively modernize its railway infrastructure in Berlin and Brandenburg. As part of the “Electronic signal box (ESTW) Schöneweide” project, there will be significant restrictions in rail traffic in the Treptow-Köpenick area in the period from July 24 to August 4, 2025. During this time, rail traffic between Berlin-Treptower Park and Berlin-Baumschulenweg is fully stopped. This measure includes extensive cable deep construction work that is necessary to increase the safety and reliability of rail traffic and to improve punctuality. Travelers are given the opportunity to use alternative travel connections through rail replacement traffic by bus. Further information on timetables and replacement connections are available on SBahn.Berlin, while the transport association Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB) provides current information on vbb.de.
The electronic signal box (ESTW) in Halle East is also expanded in parallel to these measures in Berlin. The DB will begin in August with the modernization of the outer railway node Halle (Saale). The project manager Thomas Lukowiak emphasizes the importance of this node for passenger and freight traffic. The planned measures include the construction of over 30 cable shafts, the laying of 50 kilometers of new cables and the modernization of 18 course drives. There are also restrictions in long-distance and regional traffic, which apply from August 11th to 21st. Among other things, there will be travel time extensions for IC trains, and some S-Bahn lines will experience changes in their course. A rail replacement traffic is also set up here. For detailed information, travelers should inform themselves before driving on Bahn.de and in the app DB Navigator.A look at further projects of Deutsche Bahn
The DB not only works on the projects in Berlin and Halle, but also plans significant changes in Hesse. From 2028, a new electronic signal box (ESTW) will be put into operation in Stadtallendorf, which will replace the existing mechanical technology and the relay park in Neustadt (Hesse). With the new technology, the operation is carried out via mouse clicks for soft and signals. In order to minimize disorders in rail traffic, the preparatory civil engineering and start-up work take place mostly at night and in low-traffic times. Replacement traffic on buses will be set up for regional traffic during construction locks. In this context, there are also several route closures on weekends.
The DB with these projects shows its determination to raise the rail infrastructure to a modern and reliable level. By implementing modern technological solutions, not only the safety and reliability of the transport system can be improved, but the punctuality of the trains can also be optimized. From the end of August, the DB is planning information events for interested citizens: inside in Halle to inform about the upcoming changes and their effects.
