Increase in domestic violence: BKA publishes alarming numbers - Women particularly affected
On June 7th, the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) published the "situation in domestic violence". According to the head of the reporting agency gender -specific violence by the German Institute for Human Rights, Müserref Tanriverdi, the number of people affected by domestic violence has increased by 6.5 percent compared to the previous year. There was also an increase in the previous year. It is worrying that the majority of those affected are women again. Tanriverdi emphasizes the need for political measures and calls for the rapid implementation of the violence law announced in the coalition agreement. This stipulates that women who are affected by gender and domestic violence should receive a legal claim to protection and advice.
The expert group of the European Council had already pointed out the insufficient number of shelters for affected domestic violence in October 2022 in the first evaluation report for Germany. Large differences in the amount and quality of the help offers between the federal states were also complained. Furthermore, according to Grevio, a national action plan for contraception and combating gender -specific violence is missing. Effective coordination of protection and advisory measures is crucial. Specialized support services are less common in rural areas. There is also a need for offers of help that are accessible to all those affected, especially women in vulnerable life situations such as women with disabilities or refugees.
In addition to help offers, it is also important to take preventive measures to prevent violence from the outset. This includes use among the perpetrators and the questioning of social and cultural structures in order to reduce gender stereotypes and to promote respect and equality. It is not enough to fight just the symptoms.
It is not certain whether the increase in reported cases reflects an increased willingness to register those affected or has other reasons. Nevertheless, there is undoubtedly an increased need for offers of help. In order to better understand the causes, it plays a crucial role in taking into account the non -reported cases. Next year the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the BKA are to publish the dark field study "Life situation, security and stress in everyday life - lesubia".
LAGE FILD - The numbers:
According to the Federal Criminal Police Office, a total of 256,276 people in Germany were victims of domestic violence in Germany, compared to 240,547 in 2022. This means an increase in the number of cases by 6.5 percent. According to the BKA, 70.5 percent of the victims were female, while 75.6 percent of the suspects were male. In the area of partnership, the number of cases increased by 6.4 percent, with 79.2 percent of victims being women.
Table:
year | Victim overall | Female victim | Total suspect | Male suspects
2023 | 256.276 | 70.5 % | 75.6 % |
2022 | 240.547 | - | - |
The current figures show the urgency to strengthen measures to combat domestic violence and to provide better protection and support for those affected. Close cooperation between politics, authorities and organizations is needed to tackle the problem sustainably and to combat violence in the partnership.
