The planned event on the 75th anniversary of the founding of the GDR announces exciting contributions and discussions that delve deeply into the history and legacy of the former workers' and farmers' state. The event is entitled “75 Years of the GDR – What Remains” and will take place on October 5, 2024 at 7 p.m. in the Babylon in Berlin. Admission begins at 6 p.m.
Despite the end of the GDR 34 years ago, the issue remains controversial among the public. Memory is often shaped by extreme views that defend the status quo of history. But given today's challenges, more and more people are wondering what really remains of this historic alternative. The article aims to explore precisely these questions and shed light on the experiences of different generations.
Participants and program
The prominent contributors include Egon Krenz, the last Chairman of the State Council of the GDR, and the philosopher Martin Küpper. The songwriter Linda Gundermann, the author and filmmaker Dörte Grimm, the actress Jennipher Antoni and the actress Doreen Kähler will also be on stage. They will share their opinions and insights about the GDR and its legacy.
A special highlight of the event is the screening of the DEFA feature film “The Legend of Paul and Paula,” which was made in 1973 and directed by Heiner Carow. This film is considered a classic of GDR cinematography and illuminates life at that time in a sensitive way.
The event will take place at Babylon, an iconic venue at Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße 30 in Berlin, easily accessible by subway. The tickets are available at a price of 15 euros, reduced costs 10 euros.
