150 years of bakery: a look at history and meaning
Celebrate, celebrate, celebrate! The central association of the German bakery trade is at a very special point in its history: 150 years after its foundation, on October 12, 1874, the committed bakers proudly look back! In Berlin, the foundation stone was laid for an organization that tirelessly campaigns for the interests and rights of its members. The first assembly of the 1,200 master baker was not only a milestone, but a powerful promise to strengthen this traditional industry!
But the bakery trade has gone through a lot in the past 150 years. The organization has never given up from the empire to modern reorganization! The President of the Central Association, Roland Ermer, announces: "Our association was always at the side of the bakers and improved the framework in difficult times." And that was not an easy task!
of wars and crises - the challenges of the baker's trade
A look into the past shows that the bakers had to work with fewer raw materials and defined prices under the gray clouds of the First World War. But with the wealth of ideas and a tireless spirit, they supplied both the civilian population and the soldiers with fresh bread from field bakeries. "We gave everything to take care of people!", Ermer describes the heroic times.
and the challenges continued: The terrible inflation of 1923 drove prices to absurd heights. A kilo of bread cost an incredible 300 billion marks at the time! But the bakers could not be kept down. National Socialism forced the organization to adapt, but after the Second World War there was a reconstruction that made the industry strong. In 1948 the Central Association of the Bakery was newly founded, supported by the American, British and French occupying power.
modern times - an unstoppable progress
In the 1950s, West Germany experienced an upswing! Unemployment dropped and the youth work became a priority. "Public relations was the key to strengthening our voice," explains Ermer. And how the bakery trade maintains its heir! The day of German bread, introduced in 2013, takes fresh bread and positive attention to society. Essen is culture - and thus also part of the intangible cultural heritage that the UNESCO recognized!
But the past few years have been no less challenging. The bureaucracy seemed to be an insurmountable obstacle. But the central association has proven that it is a real crisis manager! In Corona pandemic and the energy crisis, he stood firmly alongside his members and was committed to their interests. "Strong advocacy is the key to success!" Said Ermer. Despite all the challenges, the industry today shows a confident and optimistic face!
On November 5, the 150th anniversary is duly celebrated! And this is not only a festival for the bakery family, but also a digital chronicle will keep the legacy alive!
