Weitling! Buy in the neighborhood: New campaign strengthens local trade!
On July 3, 2025, an important press and photo session for the image campaign "Weitling! Buy in the Kiez" will take place on Weitlingstrasse in Lichtenberg. This initiative is part of the business street management of the Lichtenberg Economic Development Agency and aims to promote local retail and gastronomy in Weitlingkiez. District mayor Martin Schaefer (CDU) emphasizes the importance of small, owner-managed businesses for the community, while Burhan Cetinkaya, head of the Lichtenberg economic development agency, emphasizes the commitment of the traders, who are visibly supported by the campaign.
By the end of November, posters with portraits of businesses in the area will be posted in the area to increase neighborhood awareness. The visuals are from a photo shoot that took place in April. These posters can be found on advertising pillars and in shop windows within the Weitlingkiez and also expand the online presence of the economic development agency.
Supporting local trade
The commercial street management, which was launched on October 21, 2024, represents a strategic project to develop the shopping streets in the district in a future-oriented manner. The aim of the program is to improve the image of the shopping streets and establish a sustainable network. As part of the opening event, an inventory analysis was presented that deals with the challenges and opportunities of commercial streets. A keynote speech by Nils Busch-Petersen, managing director of the Berlin-Brandenburg Trade Association, presented the current trends and changes in the retail sector.
The main focuses of commercial street management are Weitlingkiez, Konrad-Wolf-Straße and the Neu-Hohenschönhausen center. This initiative, which is supported by funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy and Enterprises, is intended to provide a direct contact for businesses, retailers and owners. The planned measures include, among other things, increasing the quality of stay and use of the streets through targeted marketing strategies.
Promoting the local economy
Local economic development has the primary goal of increasing the economic strength of the region and making the location attractive for local and potential companies. This includes support in attracting new companies and creating a positive image of the location. The initiatives help to advance social development, create jobs and thus have a positive influence on local economic conditions.
A crucial aspect is the constant analysis and adaptation of funding measures to current challenges such as economic changes and environmental aspects. The networking between regional and municipal actors is of great importance here. These collaborations not only strengthen the local economy, but also ensure the transfer of knowledge and the competitiveness of local companies.
In summary, it can be seen that commercial street management and the associated campaigns such as "Weitling! Buy in the Kiez" represent an integral part of the strategy to strengthen local trade and economic sustainability in Lichtenberg. The long-term goals are not just aimed at short-term success, but are aimed at comprehensive, sustainable development of the shopping streets.
