Forest inventory reveals climate change sequences: shaping the future!

Berlin, 08.10.2024 - A public cry for active forest management! The latest results of the fourth Federal Forest Inventory (BWI IV) reveal frightening changes in the German forests. The German saw and wood industry Bundesverband e.V. (DESH) makes it unequivocally clear: The time to act is over, it is now! With alarming numbers it becomes clear that climate stable forests are required, but unrealistic climate goals could harm more than benefit!

in a shocking statement on the same day, the President Dr. Stephan Lang, whether there is really someone who cannot see the serious consequences of climate change on a walk through the forests. "Dürren, storms, drought and harmful insects have caused devastating damage in many regions of Germany," said Lang. The dramatic results of the Federal Forest Inventory now impressively reflect which wounds the climate change has already hit.

forest damage demands for regional solutions!

"Time to act has come! Active management and redesign of the forests are indispensable," emphasizes Lang. While some areas suffer greatly from forest damage, the wood stocks grow into immeasurable in other regions. "We have a unique wealth of wood in southern Germany, but it is also older and more susceptible to extreme weather," he warns. It is therefore crucial to take regional peculiarities into account: where the rewind is priority in the Harz, older trees have to make space for boys in Bavaria.

Cancellation of unrealistic climate goals!

"Our forests must be in harmony with biodiversity and wood use," explains Lang vehemently. The recourse to softwood through conversion measures is not only a necessity, but also a social responsibility. "We have to use this wood to create long -lasting products, especially under construction," he demands. One focus is only on carbon stocks and endangers the reality: CO2 reduction. Without active forestry, the bound CO2 will remain in the atmosphere!

According to the latest results of the BWI IV, it is more clear than ever: The conversion of the forests must now be promoted. "We need determined action!" Long. A wake -up call for the entire industry! Will we take the chance to protect our forests for future generations?
