Uni-Thielallee car park becomes a refugee village

On a property on Thielallee 63 in Berlin-Dahlem, the Berlin Senate plans to build a container village to accommodate 260 refugees. However, this encounters resistance, especially at the Free University. The university management feels over and emphasized that the area is actually required for its own construction work. The university had already provided support in the short -term accommodation of refugees in the past, but is now faced with space problems.

The Free University suggests that unused buildings of the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks nearby as an alternative to accommodate refugees. The Senate had decided to build 16 other container villages at the end of March because there is still a need for living space for refugees. These container villages are to be built on different fallow land and parking spaces, mainly in the eastern parts of Berlin.

Despite the need for accommodation for refugees and the measures that have already been taken, there are resistance from some residents in distinguished districts. In particular, the protests against the planned refugee accommodation on the universe area in Steglitz-Zehlendorf provide discussions. The Free University of Berlin is criticized on social media because it is considered cosmopolitan but blocks the construction of the container village. The debate shows a possible crack in the proclaimed openness and tolerance of the university.
