Salve decline: Nutrition industry is fighting in the first half of 2024
A thunder hall for the German nutrition industry! In the first half of 2024, the industry is in shock: sales are reduced again by 1.4 percent! After the catastrophic year 2023, the food manufacturers are now faced with a new setback. From January to June, the industry generated only 114.5 billion euros - a dramatic decline compared to 116.1 billion euros in the previous year. This makes it clear: the challenges grow up every day!
But not only the numbers are alarming! The mood within the industry is also tense. The IFO business climate index shows a slight improvement, but with 99.3 points remains just below the critical brand of 100. Christoph Minhoff, chief managing director of the Federal Association of the German Nutrition Industry (BVE), warns: "The continuing economic downturn in the nutritional industry is alarming.
sales dropped dramatically!
The sales figures speak for themselves: In Germany, sales were 73.7 billion euros and thus fell by 1.7 percent. It doesn't look better abroad - sales fell by 0.8 percent to 40.7 billion euros. The pricing is another topic, with a slight decline in sales prices in Germany by 0.6 percent and an increase abroad by 0.7 percent. The share of foreign sales was 35.6 percent. How long can the industry still last in such waters?
But there are glimmer of hope! The raw material prices show slight relief. The producer price index for agricultural products has dropped by 1.9 percent compared to the previous year, while animal products are more dramatic. The price increases for food potatoes (plus 44.6 percent), vegetables (plus 28.8 percent) and eggs (plus 9.1 percent) are particularly serious. However, some products have become significantly cheaper, including grain (minus 22.5 percent), poultry (minus 9.7 percent) and milk (minus 6.6 percent). What a roller coaster ride!
The burden of bureaucracy!
The German nutrition industry not only struggles with prices, but also with bureaucratic hurdles. Despite a slight increase in the number of employees, the price -adjusted turnover has long shown a decline. "The growing bureaucracy is a significant burden on the competitiveness of our companies," emphasizes Minhoff. More and more workers are needed to achieve falling sales. What is behind it? Persistent uncertainty and pushed investments!
A total of around 6,000 companies are active in the nutritional industry that achieve annual sales of EUR 232.6 billion and employ around 644,000 people. Medium -sized companies play a crucial role here: 90 percent of the companies belong to it!
Time is pushing! The industry urgently needs to take measures to free itself from this increasingly difficult situation. Innovative strength and competitiveness are at stake. Will the German nutrition industry gain the struggle for survival?
