Guided tour for the exhibition looked back: A look at colonial history

An unforgettable look into the past! On Thursday, October 17th, at 6:00 p.m., the historic town hall Johannisthal in Berlin will take the dark era of the colonial past. With free admission and without registration, history fans can experience an exclusive tour of the haunting exhibition "Recorded Back".

This permanent exhibition is not an easy topic - it is the "first German colonial exhibition", which took place in Treptower Park in 1896 and used the colonial fantasies of the time. In a shocking “Völkerschau” spectacle, 106 people from the German colonies were displayed, often without their knowledge and with the aim of using racist stereotypes. Did you know that Kwelle Ndumbe from Cameroon bought an opera glass to look at the audience and become aware of his human dignity?

A look at the dark chapters of history

The exhibition is devoted to the stories of these 106 children, women and men from Africa and Oceania, whose biographies are partly shocking. It not only illuminates its resistance to the colonial conditions, but also transports the brutal structures of the colonial exhibition and their historical context for today's generations.

Initiators of this important exhibition are the Treptow-Köpenick museums, in cooperation with the project network of decolonial culture of remembrance in the city. This initiative is a milestone: the first permanent exhibition on colonialism, racism and black resistance in a public Berlin Museum!

Visit the Museum Treptow in the historic town hall of Johannisthal at the address of Sterndamm 102, 12487 Berlin. It is open from Monday to Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and on weekends from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Do not miss this unique opportunity to deal with a decisive chapter in Berlin's history!
