Tree felling in Berlin: traffic safety is going on

In the week from January 29 to February 2, 2024, several trees in different areas must be felled due to traffic safety reasons. The street and green space office has announced that this measure must be carried out in the districts of Adlershof, Johannisthal, Köpenick-Nord, Müggelheim and Rahnsdorf. The exact data and locations, as well as the reasons for the felling were published in a press release.

in Rahnsdorf a linden tree must be felled on January 29, 2024 on Kanalstrasse. The tree has a stem foot and rootstock mechanism, which leads to a risk of overthrow. In Köpenick-Nord, two trees must be felled on January 30, 2024: a tree hazel in Güldenauer Weg and a robinia in the street under the birch. Both trees are dependent and therefore pose a danger. On January 31, 2024, a flour in Adlershof in the cemetery will be felled because it is affected by fungal attack and lazy spots. In Müggelheim, a total of five trees have to be felled on 01.02.2024, including Rottorne in the streets on Müggelberg, Appelbacher Weg, Enkenbacher Weg and two more Reddorne on the latter street. All of these trees are dependent and a danger. At the end, an maple must be felled on 02.02.2024 in the Johannisthaler Park, since rootstock research and further damage were found.

The felling of trees is an important measure to protect public security. Rotting and exhausting trees can suddenly overturn and damage buildings and vehicles as well as injuries to humans. This is particularly important in urban areas where many trees are near streets and footpaths.

The table below shows an overview of the trees concerned and their reasons for the precipitation:

| Location | Date | Tree no. | Tree species | Extent (cm) | Height (m) | Falling reason |
| ————— | ————-—-----—-————- | ——————————- |
| Rahnsdorf | 29.01.2024 | 13/5 | Linde | 204 | 20 | Stem foot and rootstock mechanism |
| Köpenick-Nord | 30.01.2024 | 62/1 | Baumhasel | 139 | 15 | Tree outline |
| Köpenick-Nord | 30.01.2024 | Ü21/8 | Robinie | 82 | 18 | Tree outline |

| Müggelheim | 01.02.2024 | 24/1 | Reddorn | 47 | 6 | Tree outline |
| Müggelheim | 01.02.2024 | 26/1-4 | Reddorn | 47 | 6 | 4 trees, all extensive |
| Johannisthal | 02.02.2024 | A/624 | Ahorn | 143 | 18 | Rootstocking and further damage |

It is important that the population is informed about such measures in order to understand the need for the need for tree felling. The preservation of traffic safety and protection against possible damage are the main reasons for these measures. The trees affected are replaced by new, healthy trees after the felling to maintain the urban green area.
