The fuss about refugee containers at the FU in Berlin-Dahlem: Resistance to the planned container village for 260 refugees at the Free University. “Woke facade is crumbling,” says President Günter Ziegler. Are the university’s concerns being heard?

Dispute over container village: FU and Senate at odds

The Senate is planning to build a container village for 260 refugees at Thielallee 63 in Berlin-Dahlem, but this is met with resistance. The Free University (FU) actually wants to build a building for teaching and research there and feels left out of the Senate's plans. The President of the FU, Günter Ziegler, criticized the fact that he only found out about the plans from the newspaper and emphasized that the university management had not approved the plan.

Berlin's refugee coordinator, Albrecht Broemme, defends the plans and emphasizes that as long as the property remains unused, it is possible to accommodate refugees there temporarily. The planned construction of a container village will only take place in the near future after nature conservation issues have been clarified.

At the end of March, the Senate decided to build 16 more container villages in Berlin to counteract the acute lack of living space for refugees. The locations are primarily in the eastern part of the city, particularly in the districts of Lichtenberg, Pankow and Treptow-Köpenick. The decision to build a container village on the FU grounds caused ridicule online because the university is considered cosmopolitan but shows resistance to the accommodation of refugees.
