Play and exercise guaranteed: car-free day in Treptow-Köpenick!

Car-Free Day will be celebrated in Berlin on September 22, 2025. On this day, streets throughout the city are closed to through traffic to create more space for play and exercise. The Treptow-Köpenick district office invites all children, families and residents to take part in these events and rediscover the urban environment. Krüllsstraße in 12435 Berlin will be transformed into a play street on Friday, September 20, 2025, between 1:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. In addition, Gründerstrasse in 12526 Berlin and Kiekebuschstrasse in 12555 Berlin will be converted into temporary play streets on Monday, September 22, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The aim of this initiative is to promote quality of life and neighborly encounters through joint activities. Residents are asked to repark their vehicles in a timely manner to ensure there are no disruptions. The Treptow-Köpenick district office is looking forward to active participation and hopes for positive feedback from citizens.

Public transport free of charge

As part of the car-free day, not only play streets are used, as local public transport in the Berlin AB tariff zone is also offered free of charge on this day. This gives citizens the opportunity to move around the city at no cost and to try out alternative forms of mobility. This event is now being celebrated in Berlin for the fourth time to raise awareness of environmentally friendly means of transport and to discuss alternative mobility without private cars. Already in 2022, 37 temporary play and neighborhood streets took place in all twelve districts of Berlin, and the success of such initiatives has been emphasized three years in a row Tagesspiegel.

Urban development and neighboring initiatives

In order to make the car-free day a real experience, road sections in the secondary road network are closed for various activities such as playing, chalk painting and eating together. In recent years there has been an increasing number of organized play street activities, which are supported both by neighborhood initiatives and by support from the district. For example, the Anzengruber Straße play street initiative in Neukölln received the “German Neighborhood Prize” because of its commitment to child-friendly urban planning. This shows how important these issues are in the urban context and how motivated citizens are to actively shape their surroundings.

Transport Senator Bettina Jarasch thanked the numerous initiatives that look after the play and neighborhood streets and emphasized the need to continue to support such actions in the future Berliner Zeitung. Car-Free Day not only offers a place of refuge for children playing, but also an important discussion about sustainable modes of transport and lifestyles in the city.
