Kladow: A district with history

Kladow, the southernmost district of the Berlin district of Spandau, impresses with its rural charm within the city of Berlin. For the first time, the district was mentioned as a "Clodow" in 1267 and is considered one of the oldest districts of Spandau. Archaeological finds show that Slavic settlements existed in the region in the 9th to 12th centuries.

The history of Kladows is characterized by significant changes. After the Reformation in 1558, the place fell into the responsibility of the Spandau office. Kladow was particularly devastated during the Thirty Years' War. In the 17th and 18th centuries, private land ownership and agriculture dominated. A remarkable point in history is the planting of mulberry trees for silk production.

Development and future of Kladow

In the early 19th century, the intensive settlement of Kladow began, and larger construction projects such as a manor house were launched in 1800. The charismatic village atmosphere has been preserved to this day, even if numerous changes have taken place in the past decades. For example, part of the former Gatow airfield was converted into residential areas, including the "Landstadt Gatow" and the Cladow Center, which shifted commercial activities from old village core.

The future of Kladows will also be shaped by sustainable urban planning measures. The upcoming event for the urban development study is a step in the right direction to preserve the character and special features of the old village center and to promote a positive further development of the district. Many people live in Kladow who appreciate the natural location on the Havel and near Lake Groß Glienick, which offer numerous leisure opportunities such as swimming, sailing and fishing.

In recent years, Kladow has also established cultural sights, such as the Landhausgarten Dr. Max Fraenkel and the Military History Museum on the former airfield site. The continued development is strengthened by dialogues and the inclusion of the citizens, so that the history and future of Kladow will also be shaped together in the coming time.
