Sheep take over Ruhwaldpark: Natural care from July 21!
On Monday, July 21, 2025, at 11 a.m., the sheep feed in the Ruhwaldpark in Berlin takes place. Around 30 rough Pomeranian landscapes will move into their new home for three to four weeks that day. This breed of sheep is traditionally at home in the region to the Mecklenburg coast and serves the purpose of naturally maintaining and greening the parking space. The buoyancy begins at the main entrance of the Ruhwald Park, Spandauer Damm 220, 14052 Berlin.
The use of the sheep in urban parks has already shown success at the Wilmersdorf stadium. The district office is responsible for this project, which brings numerous advantages for the environment. By grazing, not only sustainable and ecological green areas are cultivated, but also promoted biodiversity.
nature conservation through Schäferei
Schäfer Detlef Mohr, who has over 35 years of experience and is a master of the hiking skier, emphasized the importance of sheep for landscape maintenance. His herd, which includes more than 2,000 sheep, is known for robust and partially endangered landscape breeds such as the Pomeranian Landscape. Mohr emphasizes that landscapes would be shallow without care through sheep, which would result in a decline in biological diversity. For millennia -old cultural landscapes are dependent on people who keep them open by grazing.
A central aspect of sheep farming is to promote the ecological connection between habitats. The hiking skiers enables seeds and insects to be transported in the fur and feces of the sheep, which contributes to the preservation of biodiversity. Nevertheless, there is a decline in sheep stocks in Germany - from 2.7 million in 2000 to 1.5 million in 2024.
challenges for the Schäferei
The industry suffers from a lack of young talent, and many hiking skiers fight with the poor remuneration of their work. According to Mohr, the pastures are rare today, and the income potential is often not given. The sale of meat and wool is often considered secondary. In addition, the rough, brown wool of many sheep breeds is paid too small, which forces farmers to look for alternatives.
A ray of hope in this industry is the textile manufacturer Marco Scheel, who buys Mohrs wool out of conviction and pays 1.50 euros per kilo, which is well above the usual price of 30 cents. He uses the wool for the production of outdoor clothing and thus actively supports the protection of the diversity of life on meadows and pastures.
The coming weeks in the Ruhwaldpark show how practical nature conservation measures can be successfully implemented. The new sheep arrives are not only in the sign of the care of nature, but also to revive an important part of cultural landscape maintenance in Germany.
