Saxony leads in the 2024 education monitor: A look at the federal states
meaning of the INSM education monitor 2024 for the educational landscape in Germany
The INSM education monitor 2024 provides important insights into the educational quality of the German federal states. It is commissioned by the Institute of German Economy (IW) and offers a comprehensive analysis based on 98 indicators from 13 fields of action. This means that a variety of aspects of the education system are taken into account in order to assess the efforts to combat educational poverty and to secure specialists. This annual study has thus become the most comprehensive analysis of the educational landscape in Germany.
A central result of the current report is the fact that Saxony has the best education system in federal comparison and Bavaria takes second place. Hamburg and Thuringia join the top group. The improvement of the State of Berlin, which has worked out from 15th to 12th place to 12th place, is particularly gratifying. These developments are not only of local, but also of national interest, since they provide information about where education policy is successfully implemented.
The study focuses particularly on the fields of action, which are crucial for educational development. Saxony achieves outstanding results in the areas of funding infrastructure, school quality and educational poverty. Bavaria, on the other hand, shines in vocational training. These regional strengths offer important indications for other federal states that have to face the challenges in the field of education.
Another interesting result of the study is that the federal states, which are overall compared to the overall comparison, also show strong services in individual fields of action. Bremen achieves the best values in the University of Applied Sciences/MINT category, but has deficits in other areas. This shows that there are not only losers and winners in the educational landscape, but also there are potentials in less well -cutting federal states.
The study illustrates the importance of competition between the federal states. According to INSM Managing Director Thorsten Alsleben, this competition can contribute to the fact that successful education policy becomes visible and other federal states may be able to inspire similar measures. This represents a valuable contribution to discussion about federalism in education policy.
An area that remains underrepresented in such studies are the topics of educational poverty and integration. However, the INSM and the IW take care of this topic and plan to discuss concrete measures that are intended to improve the educational results for disadvantaged groups. This is particularly important in order to promote equal opportunities in the education system and to make future specialists in the best possible way.
The results of the educational monitor will be presented on a press conference on September 3 in Berlin, in which educational researchers Axel Plünnecke and integration expert Ahmad Mansour will explain the study in more detail. The knowledge gained is of great relevance for future education policy in Germany and can help make the right decisions for a successful education policy.
