S-Bahn Berlin mourns: Peter Buchner died – a loss for the city!

The S-Bahn Berlin mourns the loss of its long-time managing director Peter Buchner, who died on Tuesday at the age of 58 after a serious illness. With his death, he creates an indescribable gap in the company, as Harmen van Zijderveld, Head of Regional Transport at DB AG and Chairman of the Supervisory Board, emphasizes. There is great consternation among the employees and the supervisory board, as Buchner has successfully managed the fortunes of the S-Bahn since 2009.

Peter Buchner took over the management of the S-Bahn Berlin in a crisis situation for the company. With his responsible, far-sighted and determined nature, he did everything he could to keep the S-Bahn on track. Under his leadership, the trust of passengers and employees was promoted, which underlines his prudence and humanity. Buchner was a true visionary for the S-Bahn, whose commitment to the railway industry was evident over decades.

Background and career

Buchner's professional life was firmly linked to the railway industry. In 1994 he became managing director of the Usedomer Bäderbahn. In 1997 he moved to DB Regio AG, where he worked as head of controlling and human resources for the Northeast regional area. From 2000 he was a member of the regional management in the areas of finance and marketing. He was also managing director of Busverkehr Oder-Spree GmbH from 2001 to 2010. With his extensive experience, he was able to steer the Berlin S-Bahn through some of its most difficult phases.

Karsten Preißel, the Managing Director of Production, will take over the chairmanship of the management board on an interim basis until further notice. This is intended to ensure an orderly continuation of the company's business until a successor for Buchner is found.

The Berlin S-Bahn will always remember Buchner as a formative figure and as a committed fighter for the interests of passengers and employees. His sudden death leaves a void not only in the company structure, but also in the hearts of the people who worked with him and who were inspired by his passion for public transport.

The employees of the S-Bahn and the entire supervisory board express their deep sadness and pay respect to Peter Buchner for his valuable life's work. In memory of his achievements and his tireless dedication, his legacy will live on in the S-Bahn.
