The new protests of the young generation at Cologne/Bonn Airport caused a sensation and caused various reactions. I had to think of the psychologist Daniel Kahneman and his theory to the two thinking systems. Kahneman differentiates between the instinctive "System 1" and the slower but more sensible "System 2". The reflexive witnesses and accusations of how "you mess up their summer vacation to the poor people!" Or "We finally have to take a harder against these climate adhesive!" are clear examples of how people are often guided by their impulsive "System 1".

But what would the rational "System 2" say? Wouldn't it point out that blocking a runway is not the same as to stuck on a highway? Guests affected by the flight delays are entitled to compensation and in most cases the vacation is not ruined, but only the flight is delayed. In addition, "System 2" could come to the conclusion that legal oppression of peaceful protests is by no means healthy for democracy.

If we consult the "System 2", we could even discuss the content of the protests. Because the demands of the young generation are by no means thought out emotional outbreaks, but well thought out and reasonable: a binding international agreement for the exit from fossil fuels would be an effective instrument against global warming. For this reason, not only numerous countries in the global south, but also 101 Nobel laureates support this requirement. However, Kahneman was not one of the supporters. He was "deeply pessimistic" in terms of climate change and argued that people in the event of an abstract danger are too much to adhere to their impulsive "System 1".

It is important that we turn away from hasty judgments and instead are open to dialogue and the exchange of different perspectives. Only by listening and using the "System 2" can we come to a balanced discussion on pressing topics such as climate change. The protests of the young generation serve as a wake -up call to the adult world to deal with the urgent ecological challenges and find sustainable solutions.

It is time to say goodbye to the argument and voice of the future of old thinking patterns.
