Reactions to the ban on Palestinian symbols at Berlin schools - opinions differ.
Berlin's state parents and state student representatives have shown different reactions to the possible ban on Palestinian symbols at Berlin schools. In a letter to the schools, the educational administration of educational senator Katharina Günther-Wünsch explained that not only direct symbols of the Hamas or Hisbollah as well as glorifying violent representations and statements are prohibited, but also "symbols, gestures and expressions of opinion that have not yet reached the limit to criminal liability". This could affect, for example, the Kufiya or sticker known as the Palestinian cloth with inscriptions such as "Free Palestine". Those responsible on site should decide which measures are appropriate.
Norman Heise, Berlin's state parent spokesman, supports the ban and emphasizes the importance of the dialogue. Detlef Pawollek, headmaster of the Neuköllner Röntgen School, welcomes the clear attitude of the education administration, but pleads for a careful procedure for a ban. The state student representative is against the ban, as it in her opinion it further fueled the discourse. The support of Palestinian towels or symbols is regarded as legitimate expression of opinion. It was also emphasized that further training is important for teachers to promote discourse at school. The spokesman for education policy of the SPD parliamentary group have criticized the ban as undifferentiated and the Green Group calls for more financial means to prevent anti-Semitism.
