Publix opened: A new way for journalism and democracy in Neukölln

opening of the Publix: A new hope for media diversity in Berlin

On September 13, 2023, an important center for media innovation and journalism will be opened in Berlin. The publix, launched by the Schöpflin Foundation, sees itself as a place that wants to give independent journalism new swing and strengthen democracy in Germany and beyond.

With a generous investment volume of 25 million euros, the Schöpflin Foundation has created a center that offers space for more than 30 organizations such as Correctiv and Reporters Without Borders on 4,000 square meters. Here journalists can work together: inside and NGOs from different areas and bundle their skills to meet the challenges of today's media landscape.

The center of the opening is several events, including a specialist conference on September 12, in which prominent voices from the media world, as the Wikimedia director Franziska Heine, will share their views on the current media crisis. Minister of State Claudia Roth will give a speech on the evening of the official inauguration on September 13th and emphasize the importance of independent reporting for democratic opinion formation.

The background of the founding of Publix goes back to 2017 when the Schöpflin Foundation together with David Schraven, founder of Correctiv, on which vision worked, to create a place for journalistic innovations. The fund, founded by Hans Schöpflin, has long campaigned for the protection and promotion of independent media and sees a decisive step into the future in Publix.

On September 15, an open house will be held for the public that is aimed not only at experts, but also to young people and interested parties from the Berlin district of Neukölln. Workshops on topics such as podcasting and research techniques should raise awareness of the importance of independent media in the general population.

A central concern of Publix is to offer a platform for the exchange of knowledge and to develop innovative journalistic formats. Among other things, the Media Forward Fund is launched to promote journalistic business models in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. At the same time, the Nina-Grunenberg-Fellowship a training center for prospective transmissions of educational information is set up.

Tim Göbel, Managing Director of the Schöpflin Foundation, sums it up: "Strong and independent journalism is the elixir of life of a democratic society." Publix is seen as a place of hope and inspiration for everyone who is interested in the media landscape and the associated freedom of expression.

With the opening of the publix in Berlin, an important step is taken towards a lively and diverse media landscape. The importance that this place has for the formation of an informed citizen cannot be assessed highly enough. At a time when the reliability of information is increasingly questioned, Publix offers a space for critical exchange and innovative approaches to strengthen our democracy.
