A plastic surgeon from the Helios Klinikum Berlin-Buch regularly is involved in a humanitarian commitment in São Tomé, an island state in the Gulf of Guinea. São Tomé suffers from a lack of medical care, which leads to an increased number of surgical interventions. Dr. Jeremias Schmidt, specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery, flies to São Tomé twice a year to operate children and adults with burns, hand injuries and tumors together with an interdisciplinary team.

As part of his second assignment in São Tomé, Dr. Together with his team, Schmidt through a total of 35 highly complex operations in just 14 days. Despite the challenging infrastructural conditions, such as power failures and a lack of hygiene, numerous patients were successfully treated. The operating team consisted of experienced surgeons, anesthetists and surgical care staff. The duration of the operation was more than 53 hours, with more than 60 patients being looked after and looked after.

The use in São Tomé includes not only the treatment of patients on site, but also the training of local surgeons in the treatment of burns. As a result, these should be able to operate smaller and moderate injuries independently in the future. In addition to the surgical interventions, teaching, infrastructure and material preparation are also improved on site in order to be able to better provide patients in the long term.

An impressive success of the team was the successful treatment of nine -year -old Levi. Levi was born with fingers grown together (syndactylia) and was unable to learn to write before the operation. His malformation was corrected by several surgical interventions so that he can now attend school.

The patient gratitude is, according to Dr. Schmidt unbelievable. In addition to improving physical health, the self -esteem and life perspective of the patients are also strengthened.
