Expansion plans for the Ostbahn: Cost up to 1.3 billion euros

According to a report by RBB24, the expansion of the Ostbahn from Berlin to Küstrin-Kietz (Märkisch-Oderland) will cost up to 1.3 billion euros in accordance with an expert opinion from the Berlin-Brandenburg Transport Association (VBB). The route is to be expanded into two stages, whereby the electrification and the establishment of several two -track sections are provided by 2036.

The demand of Berlin and Brandenburg is that the entire route should be expanded and electrified. The route has already been included in the potential needs of the federal traffic route plan, but the financing of the expansion has not yet been secured. The countries, Deutsche Bahn and VBB are therefore in negotiations.

The expansion of the Ostbahn would bring passengers significant advantages because travel times could shorten up to 20 minutes. In particular, passengers of the RB26 regional train would benefit from improvements to the offer between Berlin and Müncheberg. By reactivating a second platform track in Müncheberg, two trains per hour could drive between Berlin and Müncheberg all day from December 2024, which would result in an increase in capacities.

The Ostbahn is not only important because of the settlement of Tesla, but also due to the growing cross -border traffic to Poland. The Berlin - Frankfurt (Oder) route could gradually reach its capacity limit. The Ostbahn interest group (IGOB) is also for the expansion of the route, since Poland has included the section Kostrzyn (Küstrin)-Gorzow-Krzyz-Pila in the European Ten T network. This requires an expansion of the Ostbahn to meet the increased transport requirements.
