Redesign of Große-Leege-Straße: More green for Alt-Hohenschönhausen!
On Monday, October 13, 2025, an important event will take place in the canteen of the primary school at Wilhelmsberg in Berlin. The organizer are the district councilor Filiz Keküllüoğlu, the Lichtenberger contact point for citizen participation (LAB) and the environmental and nature conservation office in Lichtenberg. From 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., the first ideas for redesigning Große-Leege-Straße and its surroundings are presented in Alt-Hohenschönhausen. The planning office Studio Polymorph landscape architects will present three variants.
The development concept aims to upgrade the street space, restore the promenade character and create attractive lounge areas. It takes into account both the city climate and biodiversity and recovery use. An important element of the event is the participation of the neighborhood in order to accept the suggestions and wishes of the citizens. In addition, from October 13 to 27, 2025, there is the possibility of online participation. Interested parties can make their suggestions on the platform my.berlin.de bring in.
Meaning of urban development
Urban development aims to create lively and livable settlements. These strategies not only include land use planning for various uses such as living and business, but also the urban planning renovation due to grievances in older parts of the city. Here, funding programs are often used to upgrade city quarters. These comprehensive approaches are necessary to reconcile social, economic and environmentally friendly requirements, as the Federal Environment Agency emphasizes. It is crucial that local planning takes into account the needs of the population and offer a high quality of life.
Sustainable urban development requires interdisciplinary thinking in which social and cultural needs, environmental protection and mobility flow into the decisions. The Federal Environment Ministry emphasizes that the goal 11 of the sustainability goals (SDGS) aims to promote sustainable cities and municipalities. These promote compact, mixed city structures to reduce space consumption and improve environmental quality. The challenges lie in the high structural density, which should still offer a high quality of stay.
Future of urban infrastructure
In the context of the planned development concept and the upcoming event, measures to strengthen urban green infrastructures are of central importance. A white book "Stadtgrün" already presented in 2017 defines strategies for the promotion of public freedom and to implement urban green. The focus is on reducing the use of land to 30 hectares per day by 2020.
In this sense, the upcoming events and the participation of citizens are of great importance for the creation of a sustainable and livable environment. The follow -up event on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, will present the results of the first ideas and name the variant to be followed.
