meaning of integration and social cohesion

The promotion of integration and social cohesion is crucial for the development of living quarters and neighborhoods. The Federal Ministry of Living, Urban Development and Building emphasizes the need for suitable framework conditions for these developments. According to a study, 2.3 million people with a migration background lived in Germany in 2021, which corresponds to 27.3 percent of the population. Many of these people can be found in urban areas, especially in large cities.

The federal government supports

as part of urban development funding, including investments in meeting centers and neighborhood management. Programs such as the "Social Integration in the Quarter" investment pact contribute to the renovation and construction of social infrastructure. From 2017 to 2020, the federal government provided around 200 million euros annually, which led to noticeable improvements in around 550 municipalities in Germany.

growth through migration

Immigration since 2015 has significantly influenced the understanding of urban development. National urban development policy has reacted to this by developing strategies for arrival quarters in the cities. The aim is to improve social cohesion and to promote the independent integration of immigrants. The project call "urban development and migration" was started in 2016 and has since initiated numerous pilot projects that cover different aspects of social integration, such as education, living space and participation.

The creation of an efficient, integrative social infrastructure is crucial for the development of a harmonious coexistence in the plural society of Berlin. The measures of the Senate, together with the federal support programs, aim to promote a living and coherent one.
