Since the start of the measurements in 2015, emissions have been reduced by more than 77 percent. In the reporting year, 20 houses of the hostel chain were recertified with the Greensign Level 4. A&O invested 300,000 euros in the further training and training of the employees and has planned a further 20 million euros for energy renovations by 2029. The company's goal is to be the first Net-Zero hostel chain in Europe by 2025.

a&O was founded in Berlin in 2000 and is the largest private European hostel chain with 39 houses in nine countries. The company has around 26,800 beds at 26 locations. The sustainability engagement of A&O includes the energetic renovation of older buildings, for which 20 million euros are planned by 2029. In 2023, the A&O Munich Hacker Bridge was energetically renovated and modernized for around 5 million euros. The company pursues the goal of being Net Zero by 2025 and reducing the CO2E emissions per night to less than three kilograms.

In the second A&O sustainability report, it is emphasized that travel should not be questioned. Travel form, expand the horizon and create intercultural understanding. The CO2E footprint is calculated using the internationally recognized method of Greenhouse Gas Protocol.

The report also contains information about milestones and initiatives in 2023. This includes the recertification of 20 A&O locations with the Greensign Level 4 and the introduction of the maximum green sign standards level 5 for the A&O Venice Mestre, which is therefore the first hostel in Europe with this sustainability standard. The biggest challenges in relation to the sustainability strategy of A&O are building efficiency and procurement. Since 90 percent of A&O hostels are existing real estate, the energetic renovation of these buildings is an important task. By 2029, another 20 million euros have been planned for the energy -based renovation in order to achieve at least the energy efficiency class C for every house. The reduction of indirect greenhouse gas emissions caused by upstream and downstream activities is also a complex task. A&O has developed a fundamental statement on human rights and undertakes to respect human rights in their own business area and with regard to purchased services and goods.
